Books

As mentioned here a few weeks ago I've found an enormous amount of good books at Frenchy's in the past few months. Here are but a few I would love to share with you. I think the titles are pretty much self-explanatory.

But the best book to come into our lives lately is our daughter and SIL's wedding album. Dave and I picked it up from the photographer two weeks ago. The newlyweds have not seen it yet. They will be here Friday night for the weekend. They are going to love the pictures in this book (I know I did).

Baby project, frenchy's and flip flops

My niece is expecting their first child in August. Perfect excuse to knit, knit and knit some more. Above is a work in progress which, if planned correctly, will be a baby blanket. The ivory squares are 6 different patterns hence the name of the blanket ''the baby sampler blanket''. I have to follow charts to get the proper pattern. Let's just say that I have to be some place in the house where I will be by myself while knitting. However, the colored blocks are simple stockinette stitches... don't have to follow any chart; bliss. The block in the picture is the diamond sampler.

On to Frenchy's. We stopped for a few short minutes tonight and look what I found. Tons of buttons. Old ones (very old; even smelly), plastic ones, metal ones, tiny ones and giant ones... the two red ones in the red box are wooden; oh baby I'm in heaven.

And this book ''ReadyMade - How to make almost everything''.

It is chuck-full of DIY projects - reuse and recyle objects. Such as the project below - hooks made from empty laundry detergent plastic bottles. (Side note - I would'nt be able to build this because I make my own laundry detergent and reuse the same 10 litre bucket).

Speaking of repurposing, check this out. Eco Yogini had it in her comments yesterday. I am so trying this out with my ugly dirty purple yoga mat. I guess that means I will have ugly purple flip flops this summer :-) And by the way, I encourage you to read her blog... I love it and so will you.

More harvesting and knitting

I found the two following pictures in my camera. They are from last Sunday's potato harvest.

Having a cup of warm apple cidar while waiting for supper. I served the cidar in small mason jars.

Brother Chester, sis-in-law Annette, mom (adjusting her glasses), me and brother Ken.

Ahhhhhh, how nice - wine, knitting and blogging. What else can a girl want ...

... not sour grapes for my red wine. No thanks. This is part of our first-year grape harvest. Tiny, sour grapes these beauties are. About the size of a pea.

Harvest decorations.

If you haven't picked up this magazine yet I encourage you to do so. I think I might have to practice a wee bit more for some of the patterns in this magazine. But I sure have a few favorites.

Barb, look at the back of this sweater. And the front is even prettier.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend so far and can you believe it - we are already at the end of September.

Don't laugh but I was listening to Christmas music this morning while doing my housework (I was home alone).

Recent Frenchy's

Had some down time tonight so I dropped in at Frenchy's. Found two wooden hoops for needlework and two books - A Tale for Easter is a children's book by Tasha Tudor (any book by this lady can never be left behind). And the other book Circle of Stones - woman's Journey to Herself seemed interesting. I am sooooooooo behind on my reading...

Cost for everything = $1.40

Always room for improvement

Although I try to be as healthy (physically and mentally) as possible there is always room for improvement. So far 2008 has not been too cooperative with me on the flu side. This week was my second cold since mid-January. Up to this time I bragged that I did'nt catch a cold for the past 10 years (honest).

So with that said, I've dusted off Dr. Weil's Spontaneous Healing and will read it cover to cover... again, because I think I might have forgotten a few important things he points out.

To get my body physically on track after this horrible cold I am trying to get rid of this week I will concentrate on eating mostly vegetables and fruits and drinking a lot of water for the next few weeks. I will also resume my twice-daily walking routine.

Have a good Friday tomorrow everybody !

Recent book purchase

This is my most recent book purchase. It was in my mailbox when I got home from work yesterday. I want to read more about the celebration of Yule (rituals that are not stronly affiliated with a specific religion). This book is described as exploring the pagan and regional roots to many rituals and celebrations of the Yule season. However, after reading only a few chapters I find that it focuses mainly on Christmas and not Yule.

Frenchy's Tid Bits

Those that know me pretty well, know that I love gardening and that all my gardens are organic. So imagine my delight at Frenchy's tonight when I found this 1972 The Organic Gardener manual.

I also found a nice piece of ribbon, a giant paper clip and another book about Martha Stewart.

Ahhhhh, to dream about gardening !!!!!

(Edit - I forgot to mention that I paid a great big $1.30 for everything)

In the mail

Look at what was in my mailbox today. My third issue of Natural Life Magazine. I like this magazine but I don't think I will renew my subscription. I can read the entire contents on their website.
If you look closely you can see part of my halloween costume in the upper corner of the picture.

I've been thinking about it... yup, only the thinking part yet. But I might be making a scrap quilt. I've started looking for scraps at Frenchy's. We'll see, I'll keep you posted.

Flea Market Find

I love books. I prefer books that will educate me compared to 'pretend stories' as I call them. When we went to the Farmers' Market in Annapolis Royal on Saturday there was a couple of flea market tables. I found this book for 25 cents. I also got a cookbook 'Delia's Vegetarian Collection', a small pottery vase, two terra cotta flower pots and a few other items that I can't remember right now.

Recent Frenchy acquisition

Dave and I went to Frenchy's Monday night and I found this nice basket. I'm still trying to figure out what I will use it for. Sewing supplies maybe, clothespins, craft supplies... we'll see. For now it just looks great on the dryer.

A pleasant surprise for me in the mailbox yesterday!!!!! My first issue of Natural Life magazine. I read half of it last night.

A book and a movie

This is what I am reading now. Or I should say "What I will be reading starting tonight". There it was sitting in my mailbox yesterday afternoon - thanks Ms. Postwoman. I buy most of my books at Amazon. Seeing that I prefer to recycle and reuse, I check the "used books" section first. You can get pretty good buys at times. I did for this book and got it for $2.50. And, it is in excellent shape. I have two more books coming soon (I hope). But then again, one can not multi-task reading - the one book at a time rule !

Last night Dave and I went to the movies. We don't go to the movies often and when we do it's a treat for both of us. Highly recommended by our daughter, we saw Wild Hogs. Well, well, well.... did we ever laugh in that theatre. It is a very funny movie with four great actors.

What I am reading since last night

I finished reading "A Walk on the Beach" by Joan Anderson. Of her three books that I've recently read, my favorite was "A Year by the Sea". Now I will read "Yoga Sutra" which I got for Christmas.

What I am reading now

My latest read "A walk on the beach" by Joan Anderson is very good. I previously read two of Anderson's book - "A year by the sea" and "An unfinished marriage". All three are very good reads.
