Today was the day to plant our potatoes. After we had breakfast I asked Dave if he would go in the basement (cold cellar) and get the onion bag that had the potatoe seeds we had saved from last Fall's crop. We had not been in the cold cellar all Winter. As Dave was coming up the basement stairs, I had my back to the opened door I heard him say ''Vic, I think your potatoes sprouted a bit during the Winter''. I turn around and see this...
... well yes, sprouted they did. We sure had a laugh from seeing these very long sprouts. After I snapped off the sprouts, I cut up the potatoes and left them to dry for the afternoon. I planted them in the soil after supper tonight.
What joy ! gardening season has begun.

Potatoes are something I've never planted... how would I go about doing it if I don't have any saved taters? And if I'd rather not have chemically ones? Adam's been building a larger veggie bed today, and we're snagging some room at my parent's place, so I think we might try some potatoes this year!
Sherrie,
I bought my potato plants (organic) last year from Vessy Seeds and the ones from yesterday that I planted last evening were spuds that I saved last Fall from that crop. All you need are potatoes with ''eyes'' (that's what we call them, I suppose there's many variations to the term). Maybe Carl's Store in Tusket would have them. They carry all of the Vessy seeds, even the organic ones. Too bad I did'nt have extras, I would have passed them along to you.
yeah for sprouted potatoes. yeah for gardening. we did some gardening work this weekend too -- yes, it has officially begun. i am so excited.
Definitely good for a laugh!
My mom has onions sprouting under her sink right now, I hope she plants them!
Thanks for the planting tips, I have never planted potatoes! I hope they give you a good crop!
